Have you ever bought a store brand or can of the common brands of tuna and been excited when you opened it up and there were identifiable pieces of tuna in the can and not just some mashed-up bits of suspicious looking “stuff” that is supposed to be tuna? That excitement is what you get every time you open up a can of Genova Albacore Tuna.
A few years ago I got tired of buying tuna and getting what looked like low quality cat food, so I decided to up my canned tuna game. After a long search, and checking out all the premium cans of tuna, I found the relatively affordable Genova brand of tuna, and fell in love.
Genova Albacore Tuna in Olive Oil hits all the win buttons for me. It comes in a pretty standard 5oz pull top can, which is easy to open and I think is easy to drain. I’ve read some other reviews that say it isn’t but I have to wonder just how dry they want their tuna to be.
This tuna is packed in olive oil which helps it retain its texture and flavor much better than packed in water. Why are all the big box brands packed in water these days? It is cheaper. Not better, just cheaper and that is all they care about.
Something you will have to get used to is that when you fork this tuna out of the can, and you have to fork it out, not just shake a glop out like with the cheap stuff, you will need to break it up of for use in recipes. This tuna comes packed in actual chunks, so to make a nice smooth filling, you will need to break it up a bit. This seems like a small concession to make for excellent quality tuna.
Where to Get Genova Albacore Tuna
You can find Genova tuna in most grocery stores at varying prices. The easiest place I’ve found to get it is on Amazon, where I buy a 12-pack at once so I can keep the pantry stocked up. It comes up to be about what I would pay at the grocery store and I don’t have to go hunting for it.

Is Genova Albacore Tuna In Oil Good For you?
Compared to other brands of canned tuna, Genova Albacore Tuna is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for brain function and heart health. And because it’s packed in olive oil, you’re getting a dose of healthy monounsaturated fats as well. These healthy fats are known to help reduce inflammation, improve cholesterol levels, and lower the risk of heart disease.
Not only does the olive oil add to the health benefits, but it also enhances the taste and texture of the tuna. The oil helps the tuna retain its moisture and texture, so you don’t end up with a dry, flavorless tuna salad. And because olive oil is so flavorful, it adds a delicious richness to the tuna that you just don’t get with water-packed brands.
